The 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup

The 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup, the seventh version of the competition, was hosted mainly by England, with some games being hosted in Ireland, Wales, Scotland and the Netherlands. Australia won the cup by beating Pakistan by 8 wickets. It was a one-sided final match at the Lord's cricket ground in London
The 12 teams were separated into 2 groups; each team played all the others in their group in the league period. The top three from each group advanced to the Super Sixes, a new conception for the 1999 World Cup, where each qualifier from group A played each qualifier from group B. The teams also carried forward their points from the games against the other qualifiers from their group. The top four in the Super Sixes contested the semifinals.

Super Six Stage

The method of carrying forward points received against other qualifiers meant Zimbabwe headed the table before a match had been played, while they were beaten in all three games and eliminated. India, handicapped by qualifying without a point, went out despite a convincing victory over Pakistan, and Australia also had to come from a standing start, only securing a semi-final place against South Africa with a five-wicket win in their final match. Pakistan topped the group, despite only winning one Super Six match (against Zimbabwe). New Zealand also went through with a win.

 Final

"An unworthy match produced worthy winners," well-known Wisden Cricket Monthly. The game was willingly expected, even although the Lord's crowd was more corporate than enthusiasts, but a match that had started at 11.15, half an hour late, was all over by 4.35 because Pakistan, the most thrilling side in the tournament, had gone to pieces when it mattered most.
